Bolton News Reports on the 1st Round Matches: Colliers Vets (Leigh) 2 - 1 Bolton Wyresdale Colliers won this match with goals scored by Reynolds after a solo run from the halfway line finishing with a delicate chip, and Naylor netting from 20 yards with a fine drive. Trying to pass back to his keeper, Higham was unfortunate to see the ball bobble over his keeper’s foot and roll into the empty net. Despite this, the Vets never looked in trouble, and came out worthy winners. Ashton Athletic 1 – 0 Hindley Town In a fast competitive match, with tackles being hard and fair, Ashton came out winners. The first half of the match was even, with chances being limited. In the second half, Ashton's superior fitness allowed them to gradually take control and only good saves from Unsworth kept Hindley in the match. Ashton's only goal was scored by McVeigh and came late in the match. Hindsford 1 – 1 Leigh Athletic Leigh started off well, attacking from the start, and putting Hindsford under a lot of pressure. With plenty of possession, they looked very much in control. After 20 minutes they took the lead after Sumner latched on to a poor clearance and tucked the ball neatly into the net from 18 yards. Shortly after this, Hindsford’s Redman had to come off after suffering a broken nose in an accidental collision. This seemed to change the game, and Hindsford started to get more into Leigh’s defence. Hindsford had the upper hand for most of the second half and were always likely to equalise. This they did when Dunn came off the bench to score. It looked as if Hindsford would go on to win the match when in the last moments Leigh had a penalty claim turned down. The match went into penalties and Leigh Athletic went through by 5-4. Daisy Hill 1 – 0 Pennington FC Daisy Hill won this one-sided encounter with a single goal late in the second half, leaving a final score, which flattered the visitors. In a game that became increasingly bad-tempered as Pennington struggled to get out of their own half, they had a man sent-off for a high challenge on the Daisy Hill left wing attack. The pressure finally told when with the visitors, down to 9 men, capitalised on their overwhelming strength. Ashton Town 8 – 0 Atherton Collieries XI
This one-sided
affair was effectively over with the home side leading by 5-0 after 30 minutes.
Although the next 30 minutes was goal-less, Ashton completed the scoring in the
second half, finishing the game comfortably.
Tempest Utd FC 1 - 2 Hindley Town FC Hindsford FC (Res) 0 - 2 Bolton Lads Club FC
Coming into this game as cup holders, Bolton Lads Club struggled to dominate the
game until they went ahead with a penalty awarded by the assistant referee.
Bolton continued to struggle into the second half, with the home side putting
them under increasing pressure while playing up the slope. The visitors hung on
and broke away with 5 minutes to go, leading to the home defence conceding a
second penalty. Wes Gallagher gladly accepted his second penalty of the night to
make the game safe. This comfortable
win for Atherton was notable for an inspired performance from Astley and
Tyldesley's goalkeeper, Rob Bennett. He kept the score to 1-0 at half-time, Lee
Parton scoring after 35 minutes. More defensive work by the visitors in the
second half led to several missed chances, until A&T's luck ran out and Mark
Parry and Mark Prince scored further goals for Atherton. Despite this, the
visitors didn't let their heads drop, and Tony Moss scored a late consolation,
lobbing the ball over the Atherton keeper from 15 yards. Even with the scores level at 0-0 at half time, it was clear that the home team were struggling in the very hard, dry conditions against a highly competitive Highfield side. Playing the second half up the slope at Hindsford FC, the Wigan league side looked increasingly dominant until Jamie Harrison broke the deadlock on 60 minutes. Ben Kay immediately doubled the score, and shortly afterward Jamie Harrison scored again with a tap-in. Neil Westhead completed the scoring for Highfield close to the end with a marvellous low drive from over 30 yards. |
