Bolton News Report on the Final

 Ashton Town 0 - 1 Ashton Athletic

The final was contested between the two highest scoring teams in the competition with 33 goals between them. Surprising then, that Ashton Athletic won the Charity Cup this year in a keenly contested final at their local rival's own ground with a single own-goal! In a match of very few clear cut chances, the goal came from a defender's head when a punt upfield was contested by the competition's leading goalscorer Paul McVeigh. For once, the defender got his head to the ball, only to see it lob over the his keeper and one bounce into the back of the net. It was a disappointing end to a spirited performance by the youngsters of Ashton Town, but a happy end for the team with the best defensive record in the competition.

Bolton News Reports on the Semi-Final Matches

 Ashton Town 3 - 1 Tyldesley United

Ashton Town cruised into the final to play their local rivals, in a game which was fast and competitive. Tyldesley only showed glimpses of the form that got them to the semi, despite having taken a few days of rest and relaxation between rounds in Finland ! Paul Crewe scored the first goal for Ashton, with a flying volley meeting a firm cross from the right, and being buried in the left hand side of the net. That's how it stayed until half time, with Tyldesley staging a strong fight-back and finally equalising after 10 minutes of the second half. Mark Crompton was the scorer, beating the keeper from 6 yards. After that, Tyldesley's performance faded a little, and inevitably Ashton went ahead again, with Liam Jeffrey scoring no more than a tap-in inside the 6 yard area. Tyldesley continued to fight, but Danny Smith put them out of their misery finally with the third goal from 12 yards to the goalie's right hand.

 Breightmet United 2 - 5 Ashton Athletic

Paul McVeigh continued his scoring form for Ashton, with all five of his side's goals in their semi final victory over Breightmet. The scoring started early, with McVeigh capitalising in the first minute when Breightmet goalkeeper failed to hold a cross from the left wing. His second and third goals followed soon, with a lob beating the keeper from outside the penalty area and a flick at the near post on 15 minutes.
After a more even period of play, Ashton struck again before half time, with McVeigh scoring with a low shot on the turn from 12 yards. The second half was more even, but despite this, Ashton were the first to score again with McVeigh completing his five goals with a penalty. Breightmet finally got on the score sheet on 70 minutes, with Clint McLaughlin firing into the bottom right hand corner from 18 yards. Ashton were beginning to look nervous when Rob Howarth scored with a great shot from 25 yards over the keeper, but held on to move comfortably into next week's final to await Tyldesley United or Ashton Town.

Bolton News Reports on the Quarter-Final Matches

 Breightmet United 2 - 1 Leigh Athletic

The Manchester League Premier Division supplied both teams for this pulsating game of attacking football. Leigh were dominant early on, and struck the woodwork twice before going ahead with a direct free kick from 20 yards by Carl Shepherd into the bottom left corner. Understandably, Breightmet fought back in the first half, and applied lots of pressure before equalising with a Gareth Ainsworth header from a Clint McLaughlin corner.
The second half continued with the home side attacking early on and they scored what turned out to be the winner from a long clearance by their keeper to Gary MacShane who calmly slotted home after beating one defender. Breightmet could have made the game safe with a number of chances, but inevitably the visitors applied most of the pressure for the last 20 minutes. Danny Melling missed the best chance with a close range header past the post in the last minute.

 Atherton Town 1 - 3 Ashton Town

Phil Howard opened the scoring for Ashton in this exciting quarter final at Atherton Town. This was also a game of two penalties, and Atherton had the first, but missed it and their opportunity to equalise soon after the opener. Another chance came along soon enough, and Chris Mulchay made sure this time with a tap-in after breaking away and receiving the ball from a free-kick. The second half was just as good, and the second penalty came along early, this time to Ashton, with Atherton's keeper appearing to be injured in the play immediately before. Danny Smith made no mistake from the spot, and a Gary Crompton header before the end made the match safe for Ashton.

 Tyldesley Utd 4 - 1 Hindley Town

Dave Fashou scored both goals in the first half of this match to continue his recent scoring form. Despite the score line, Hindley had enjoyed most of the possession in the first half, and it wasn't long after the interval when they finally pulled a goal back when Ian Costello scored. The visitors continued to press, and went close again several times before Tyldesley finally made the game safe with goals by Peter Berry and Lol Willis.

 Ashton Athletic 3 - 1 Bolton Lads Club

Last year's cup winners went out of the competition at the quarter final stage, against a highly competitive Ashton Athletic side. This was a genuine "game of two halves" though, with Ashton leading comfortably, 3 - 0 at half time, and having another ruled-out for offside. Paul McVeigh had scored 2, taking his competition tally to 5, and Mat Mahoney completing the scoring. The second half was a different matter, with Lads Club pressing consistently. Their only reward came with a clear penalty, comfortably converted by Dave Warburton. Despite more pressure from Bolton, an impressive Ashton defence ended the game on top.
