Breightmet
United 1 – 0 Atherton Town (Reserves)
Tyldesley
United 1 – 1 Three Crowns
(Tyldesley won 4-3 on penalties) A spirited and skilful performance saw the Colliers ahead at half-time by 2 - 1 with the home side looking frantic against their composed play. They led twice through an own goal by Mike Wood and good header by David Smith. In between, Ashton had got back on level terms when Chris McNally scored. The second half was a different matter, when Ashton's youth finally began to tell and they ran in 5 goals without reply. Mike Wood made amends for his earlier o.g. and that was complimented by goals from Adam Gilchrist, Mat Gregory, Liam Jeffrey, and Matty Smith. Daisy Hill 0 – 3 Hindley Town Lots of pressure from the home side in the first half came to nothing, before Grant Hurst scored for Hindley against the run of play. The match became more even in the second half, with both chances missing chances. Steve Smith finally broke the deadlock and added to his side's first half goal with a decent low shot. The Daisy Hill pressure grew from that point, and with Hindley struggling to get out of their own half, their goalkeeper Gareth Wood, made a string of saves, continuing his good form from the first round. Daisy Hill just couldn't score, and to finish the match, Tom Draper tapped-in after a breakaway to make it a comfortable win for the visitors. Ashton Athletic 4 – 0 Highfield Two goals in each half settled this game which, for half an hour, looked to be a very close contest. The visitors looked the stronger at first, but were unable to finish. Ashton scored on the half-hour with a tap-in after an error in the Highfield defence, and by the time their second goal (a penalty) went in, close to half time, their dominance was apparent. Both 1st half goals were scored by striker Paul McVeigh. In the second half, Ashton scored a further two goals against a dispirited Highfield, to run out comfortable winners. The first a header from a corner scored by Martin Rigby, and the last by Mat Mahoney with a rising shot into the top left corner. Ashton will take on the holders Bolton Lads Club in the quarter finals. Leigh Athletic 1 – 1 Howe Bridge (Leigh won 4-2 on penalties) In a lacklustre
performance Leigh
struggled in this match against a spirited performance by their neighbours from
Howe Bridge. Leigh were fortunate to take the lead early-on with an own goal
from the opposition defence. The rest of the first half was even, with
relatively few goal attempts and played in a good spirit. The second half
continued in the same vein, but with increasing pressure applied by Howe Bridge
as they strived for an equaliser. Just when it looked to be too late, Tom
Valentine popped up to score from close range and send the match to penalties.
Atherton Town 2 – 0 Bolton County Atherton Town's second consecutive home tie resulted in a comfortable win over Bolton County. While neither side really got going in this match, most of the play and chances came from Atherton. They took the lead in the first half with a scrappy goal scrambled home by Mike Garfin, from close range after a corner. With few chances for the next hour, the game was finally made safe with the best move of the match, Mark Parry scoring with a low shot. Bolton Lads Club 1 – 1 Fir Tree FC (Bolton Lads Club won 4-2 on penalties) The cup holders
struggled in this competitive match against a skilful looking but under-strength
Fir Tree side. The visitors had scraped together a 10 man starting team due to
traffic problems. Despite this they led within 15 minutes when Steve Marsh fired
home. Fir Tree continued to dominate the first half, and only the post and then
the crossbar kept their score to 1. Inevitably one goal wasn't enough, and
pressure in the second half from the Bolton side eventually told when Jeff
Brooks lobbed home from 15 yards out. 10 man Fir tree continued to create
chances, but neither side could break he deadlock. |
